ibrahim HATiBOGLU / A Critical Approach to the Methods of Hadith Criticism in the Era of Modernisation      - Arabic -

Abstract: This article attempts, first, to analyze some of the key issues such as repudiation and critique of hadith as well as Orientalist thinking within the context of ‘modernist approaches,’ determining the main characteristics of modern methodologies of critique and evaluating their historical development within the Muslim world. It is argued in the article that the real motive behind taking a critical attitude towards hadith during what might be called ‘formative period,’ and ‘the systemization period,’ which are closely related, seems to be the Western thinking since there are significant similarities between the two. Moreover, the issues of the main characteristics of ‘the modernist thinking’ and the way it distinguish itself from the classical hadith thinking are also considered, evaluating some of the weaknesses of the modernist thinking and presenting several suggestions on this issue.
